Avuncular DNA Testing

Avuncular DNA testing also known as aunt or uncle DNA testing allows a full sibling of the alleged father or mother to participate in a DNA test. An avuncular DNA test will verify if a biological relationship exists between the alleged aunts or uncles and the target niece or nephew.
This type of testing is possible because we all inherit genetic material from our biological parents who, along with their siblings, have inherited their genetic material from their parents. Our genetic material will help determine our biological relationship with our aunts and uncles.

Including the biological mother is always suggested in relationship testing. Adding the biological mother helps prevent results from being inconclusive. If the biological mother is not available, the test can still be performed.

Avuncular DNA Testing FAQ

An aunt or uncle paternity test is when 1 person is trying to determine paternity by testing their possible paternal aunt or uncle. 1 or more known full siblings to the alleged father would be tested against the child in question.

Aunt or uncle paternity tests will provide a probability index and percentage on whether the brother to the aunt or uncle is the father to the child.

If the alleged father is unavailable or not willing to take a test, then an aunt or uncle DNA test is a great option.

The aunt or uncle need to be full siblings with the alleged father to include them in a DNA test.

The most common reason to do a legal aunt or uncle DNA test would be if the father passed away and there isn’t a sample available for testing.

Legal avuncular testing is commonly used for inheritance purposes. It can also be used if the child is a minor and needs to prove paternity for social security benefits.

Yes! Aunt or uncle DNA tests can be collected using a home testing kit and sending it to the laboratory for testing.

Results for aunt or uncle DNA testing kits are for personal reasons only. If results of the DNA test are only needed for peace of mind, then the home DNA testing kit, is the most cost effective option.

For most aunt or uncle (Avuncular) DNA tests, the samples are collected using 4 sterile buccal swabs on each individual testing. These sterile cotton tip swabs are brushed against the inside of the cheek collecting the epithelial cells located inside of our mouths. These types of collections are completely painless and can be performed on individuals of any age. Because the DNA found in our cheek cells is the same DNA found in all of our cells throughout the body, the results from this test would be exactly the same as if performing the test using a blood sample or other kinds of “special” samples.

The collection for a Legal Avuncular test must be carried out by an unbiased, professional third party, which we can arrange at one of our many collection sites. A thumbprint and photo of each individual testing will also be taken at the time of collection. This is part of the Chain of Custody, and provides proof of who was collected for testing.

Both grandparents are suggested in most instances. However, there are certain situations that would not require both grandparents testing. To go over the best options for your situation, you may want to call us to discuss.

If the child in question is a male, it is always best to use an uncle. 2 male paternal relatives have an extra advantage when testing for the same male lineage. Males from the same male lineage will inherit the same Y chromosomes.

If the child in question is a female, the DNA test with an uncle or an aunt will hold the same level of accuracy.

Please remember with aunt and uncle DNA testing, the aunt or uncle need to be the alleged father’s full siblings.

There are a few factors that determine the price for avuncular DNA testing. Do you need the test for legal purposes or just peace of mind? How many people will be providing a sample?

The cost of a legal avuncular DNA test including 2 participants is $349. Any additional participant is $125.

The cost of an avuncular home testing kit including 2 participants is $179. Any additional participant is $69.
