A History of Paternity Testing
Over the years, we have gotten used to the idea of DNA and the role it plays in our lives. It goes from determining who committed crimes to establishing the paternity of a child. However, the journey to reliable paternity testing wasn’t always smooth.
Questioning paternity has been an issue since the beginning of humanity. By the start of the 20th century, scientists and doctors were already trying to develop methods for determining fatherhood. In the 1920s and 1930s, people turned to various kinds of blood typing to possibly answer the question. Unfortunately, this approach fell short in accuracy and could only exclude between thirty and forty percent (30-40%) of the male population from being fathers.
The discovery of DNA by James Watson and Francis Crick in the 1950s laid the foundation for subsequent developments. In the 1960s, researchers identified genetic markers called polymorphisms, which allowed for a more accurate comparison of DNA between a child and a potential father. While these were insufficient to ascertain anything, they proved that progress was on the horizon.
The next breakthrough came in the 1970s when HLA (human leukocyte antigen) typing emerged as a more accurate method. It could exclude up to eighty percent of the male population from being the father, depending on the rarity of the father’s HLA type. But obviously, this method had its limitations. It’s less than 99% accurate and requires a significant amount of blood, making it impractical for infants under six months old.
Fortunately, the 1980s brought about a revolutionary advancement, which saw the introduction of DNA profiling take center stage. Scientists discovered highly variable regions in the DNA sequence known as short tandem repeats (STRs), which enabled the creation of unique DNA profiles for each individual, akin to a genetic fingerprint.
With the advent of DNA profiling, paternity testing has become more accurate and accessible. Laboratories adopted PCR (polymerase chain reaction) to amplify DNA samples, improving analysis efficiency. This technological leap revolutionized the field, making paternity testing available to a broader audience.
This breakthrough provided the information we now take for granted. Determining paternity has never been simpler, and the options for doing so have only grown.
Moreover, the legal system recognized the significance of DNA paternity testing. The courts began accepting DNA test results as solid evidence in cases involving child custody, child support, and inheritance rights.
In recent years, technology has continued to advance paternity testing. DNA can now be extracted from various sources, such as saliva, hair, and even ancient bones. This makes paternity testing possible even if the potential father is absent or deceased.
Furthermore, the rise of direct-to-consumer DNA testing companies like TestMeDNA has made paternity testing more accessible to the general public. Now, anyone can order a kit online, collect a sample in the comfort of their own home, and send it off to a lab for analysis. We can only speculate about what innovations will be made in this exciting field as technology develops further.
